Mr Miles has set up a joint infection unit at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and is its lead clinician. This uses a multidisciplinary team approach to diagnose and treat infection and attracts referrals from all over the country. Not all infections are as clinically obvious as this one and many need complex investigations to prove whether infection is present. It is also vital to establish which species of bacteria is causing the infection and which antibiotics to be used.
The team has access to highly specialised radiological and microbiological systems to increase the diagnostic reliability. This is allowing Mr Miles to be involved in a number of research areas into infection around joint replacement prostheses.
Mr Miles treats most of his infected joint referrals at Stanmore as this has the backing of the whole joint infection team. He is very happy to see patients for second opinions and also patients with isgnificant loss of skin and other tissues. In these cases he operates in conjunction with a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgical colleague.
